isolation chest
Pec Deck
chest · shoulders
machine · beginner
How to do it
- 1Set the seat so the handles sit at about chest height and your back stays against the pad.
- 2Bring the handles together in front of your chest, then let them open under control until you feel a stretch.
What to think about
- A small bend in the elbows, held the whole way. The angle should not change as you close.
- Squeeze at the point where your hands meet rather than rushing through it.
What usually goes wrong
- Setting the arms so far back at the start that the stretch turns into a wrench at the front of the shoulder.
Worth knowing
- This puts the shoulder in its most open position under load. If the front of your shoulder pinches rather than stretches, shorten the range before you add weight.

What the cautions rest on
The safety points above come from these, not from house opinion.
- Strength and muscle gain require progressively increasing demand over time.
- Weight training carries a low injury rate compared with most field and contact sports.
- Holding your breath through a heavy rep raises blood pressure sharply, which matters most for people carrying cardiovascular risk.
Who checked this
Nobody qualified has. These are standard coaching points and ordinary gym safety, written down: how to set the thing up, what to control, and when to stop a set. They are not a clinical opinion and no physiotherapist or strength coach has read them back. If they disagree with somebody who can actually see you lift, believe that person.
